In the Atlantic French coast, significant mortalities were observed in oyster communities during gametogenesis. These deaths possibly result from the cumulative effects of various stressors such as seasonal temperature variations, pesticide application and the release of contaminants from the resuspension of sediments. A field survey, based on aquaculture conditions at 15 and 70 cm from the sediment bed with genetically-resistant (R) and -sensitive (S) lines, showed a stress condition. Significant weight loss was observed during May 14th through June 10th for both R and S lines. On one hand, the levels of the egg yolk vitellin in females were decreased at May 14th for both R and S lines. On the other hand, a significant increase in vitellin production was... |

Good Environmental Status (GES) for descriptor 8 of MSFD is reached when concentrations of contaminants are at levels not giving rise to pollution effects. According to the decision 2017/848/CE, descriptor 8 is defined by four criteria: concentration in the relevant matrices (sediment, biota) (D8C1), effects of chronic contamination to the marine organisms (D8C2), duration and spatial extent of acute pollution events (D8C3), effects of acute contamination to the marine organisms (D8C4). The GES for descriptor 8 is assessed at the level of four marine subregions (SRM), including: Channel – North Sea (MMN), Celtics Seas (MC), Bay of Biscay (GdG) and the Occidental Mediterranean Sea (MO). In order to achieve GES, each indicator of descriptor 8 should respect... |

Summer mortality of Pacific oysters is known in several countries. However no specific pathogen has been systematically associated with this phenomenon. A complex combination of environmental and biological parameters has been suggested as the cause and is now starting to be identified. A high genetic basis was found for survival in oysters when a first generation (G1) was tested in three sites during summer. This paper presents a synthesis on physiological characteristics of two selected groups ('R' and 'S', from families selected for resistance and susceptibility to summer mortality respectively), of the second and third generations. R and S showed improvement or reduction of survival compared with the control in both field and laboratory trials... |

An epidemiological survey was conducted in the Seine estuary and in two smaller and relatively preserved estuaries on the French Atlantic coast in order to estimate the occurrence of liver lesions in European flounder, Platichthys flesus, and also to seek putative risk factors for the recorded pathologies. Four hundred and seventy-eight fish of both sexes and of different size ranges were sampled in the three studied areas, 338 of which in the Seine estuary. All fish were examined for histopathological liver lesions, while DNA adducts and otoliths were analyzed on a subsample. Five categories of hepatic lesions were recorded with the following prevalence for the Seine estuary: 36.7 % inflammations, 8 % parasites (mainly encysted nematodes), 6.5 % foci of... |

An international workshop on marine integrated contaminant monitoring (ICON) was organised to test a framework on integrated environmental assessment and simultaneously assess the status of selected European marine areas. Biota and sediment were sampled in selected estuarine, inshore and offshore locations encompassing marine habitats from Iceland to the Spanish Mediterranean. The outcome of the ICON project is reported in this special issue as method-oriented papers addressing chemical analyses, PAH metabolites, oxidative stress, biotransformation, lysosomal membrane stability, genotoxicity, disease in fish, and sediment assessment, as well as papers assessing specific areas. This paper provides a background and introduction to the ICON project, by... |

Specimens of the mussel Perna perna were collected along Moroccan coasts to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs) bioaccumulated in the tissues, and to measure benzo[ a] pyrene hydroxylase (BPH) activity. Chemical analysis of PAHs show that the Mediterranean (Nador, Martil, Tanger) and central Atlantic coasts ( from Rabat to Jorf Lihoudi) are those most contaminated ( 351 245 ng.g(-1) dry weight in Tanger). The mussel contaminants were of mixed origin for most of the locations with non negligible inputs of petrogenic origin in many of them. Baseline levels of PAHs were between 6 and 55 ng.g(-1) dry weight. BPH activity showed significant correlation (r(s) = 0.64, P < 0.05) with total PAH concentrations at the six most... |

Pollutants via run-off into the ocean represent a potential threat to marine organisms, especially bivalves such as oysters living in coastal environments. These organisms filter large volumes of seawater and may accumulate contaminants within their tissues. Pesticide contamination in water could have a direct or indirect toxic action on tissues or cells and could induce alteration of immune system. Bivalve immunity is mainly supported by hemocytes and participates directly by phagocytosis to eliminate pathogens. Some studies have shown that pesticides can reduce immune defences and/or modify genomes in vertebrates and invertebrates. Metaldehyde is used to kill slugs, snails and other terrestrial gastropods. Although metaldehyde has been detected in... |

With the aim of developing biomarkers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) genotoxicity for biomonitoring of the marine environment, the formation of DNA adducts and oxidative DNA damage was studied in the sentinel organism Mytilus. Mussels M. galloprovincialis were exposed for 21 d to different doses of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) (50 and 100 mg B[a]P kg(-1) dry wt mussel d(-1)) via trophic intake. The kinetics of B[a]P concentration in whole mussel tissues was determined in both groups, and a dose-response study was conducted for both gill B[a]P-related DNA adducts and 8-oxo-7, 8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodGuo) formation in gill and digestive gland DNA. Exposure was followed by a 10 d depuration period to study mussel recovery. Although B[a]P was... |

This paper reports a full assessment of results from ICON, an international workshop on marine integrated contaminant monitoring, encompassing different matrices (sediment, fish, mussels, gastropods), areas (Iceland, North Sea, Baltic, Wadden Sea, Seine estuary and the western Mediterranean) and endpoints (chemical analyses, biological effects). ICON has demonstrated the use of a framework for integrated contaminant assessment on European coastal and offshore areas. The assessment showed that chemical contamination did not always correspond with biological effects, indicating that both are required. The framework can be used to develop assessments for EU directives. If a 95% target were to be used as a regional indicator of MSFD GES, Iceland and offshore... |

Many maritime countries in Europe have implemented marine environmental monitoring programmes which include the measurement of chemical contaminants and related biological effects. How best to integrate data obtained in these two types of monitoring into meaningful assessments has been the subject of recent efforts by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Expert Groups. Work within these groups has concentrated on defining a core set of chemical and biological endpoints that can be used across maritime areas, defining confounding factors, supporting parameters and protocols for measurement. The framework comprised markers for concentrations of, exposure to and effects from, contaminants. Most importantly, assessment criteria for... |

As the marine mussel Mytilus edulis is commonly used as a sentinel species, it would be useful to develop a primary culture of the target organs most often in contact with the marine environment. This study reports an improved method for dissociating the digestive gland and gills of M. edulis and considers the effect of mussel storage on cell viability and functionality before culture initiation. Viability and enzymatic activities such as those of esterase and peroxidase were monitored by flow cytometry, a sensitive, objective technique allowing large volumes of cells to be counted within a short time. A primary culture of digestive gland showed more than 75% viability after 72 h. Mussels were maintained in an aquarium containing clean, oxygenated seawater... |

Monitoring of marine environment quality can be based on chemical analysis of contaminants in the major components of the environment: seawater, sediment, biota. The respective interest of these different matrices is discussed and the fundamentals for the use of bivalves in the international Mussel Watch are presented. The objectives of the French RNO are 1) to assess the levels and trends of contaminants; 2) to assess the biological effects of contaminants. Analysis of the chemicals in biota is an indispensable complement to the biological approach, allowing their bioavailable fraction to be quantified. However, only a fraction of xenobiotics incorporated in living beings is biologically active and can exert a noxious effect on the biota. In addition,... |

The establishment of a network to assess pollutant effects is a current concern of international bodies such as the North Sea Task Force, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. With respect to the French coasts, three major considerations have been defined : the choice of monitoring areas ; the determination of a target species according to different criteria such as wide distribution, limited migration and contact with pollutant-rich sediments; and the selection of suitable parameters. This paper concerns the strategy adopted for the French coast. Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase, a specific cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenase, measured by a simple microplate assay, was selected as an... |
